S T A T E M E N T
Sandra Bejarano *(1991) is a Spanish artist from Madrid currently based in Munich. Her work addresses issues related to the female body through performance and installation. By incorporating unconventional materials—such as blood, fingernails, vaginal fluid, among others—her exhibitions explore the limits of shame and aesthetics. These materials are presented in a sterile and visually appealing manner, aiming to challenge and destigmatize taboos surrounding corporeality, sex and gender in contemporary Western culture.
Her pieces are full of double meanings. Through an ambiguous game of perception, Sandra ́s works lead the viewer to question what they are actually seeing and, consequently, to reconsider their own preconceived ideas, and moral values.
What if something we find repulsive is presented in a pleasing way? Does it then become beautiful? And, upon discovering the true nature of the artwork and its materials, would that cause a provocation or a revelation?
In recent works, she has also explored other topics such as human reproduction, in vitro fertilization, and the expansion of childbearing possibilities through egg freezing. Through these pieces, she reflects on new forms of motherhood in a capitalist society, questioning how technology and the market influence our most intimate and personal decisions.
